This tweet was posted on July 1, 2025, by a user named @iamAryan_17, who shared a screenshot and a picture of the vehicle. The picture shows the car adorned with a garland of flowers and guarded by SPG (Special Protection Group) personnel, suggesting that it is indeed part of the Prime Minister’s convoy. But is this claim true?

Alongside the screenshot was a photo of Prime Minister Narendra Modi sitting in a Toyota Land Cruiser. The post sparked wide discussions on social media, with some users advocating for equality before the law, while others questioned the authenticity of the claim. However, no official statement has yet been released by either the Delhi Traffic Police or the Prime Minister’s Office regarding this matter.

What Does the Law Say?

The viral post has led many to seek the truth. The vehicle in question is likely part of the government fleet operated by the SPG in the Prime Minister’s convoy.

The security of the Prime Minister is a top national priority. The Special Protection Group (SPG) is responsible for the Prime Minister’s security, including managing the vehicles in his convoy. These SPG vehicles are bulletproof and designed to protect against threats. Any slowdown or halt in the convoy could increase risks, which is why some traffic regulations are relaxed to ensure a swift and safe journey.

The Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 provides certain exemptions during emergencies to vehicles like police, fire brigade, and ambulances. SPG vehicles fall under a similar category because they are associated with national security. While the law doesn’t explicitly mention a complete exemption, under the SPG Act of 1988 and government protocols, these vehicles are prioritized for security and may be granted relief from certain traffic rules. This means that if the convoy is speeding, it is not considered a violation.

Why Was a Challan Issued?

Nowadays, automated traffic cameras play a significant role in catching traffic violations. These AI-enabled cameras operate 24/7. When a vehicle overspeeds, jumps a red light, or parks illegally, these cameras scan the license plate and automatically issue an e-challan.

The vehicle mentioned in the viral tweet was likely fined because the traffic camera treated it like any other vehicle. These systems are automated and don’t distinguish whether a vehicle is part of the SPG or the Prime Minister’s convoy. Once the number plate is scanned, the system issues a challan even if it’s a mistake. Such technical limitations and lack of integrated data can lead to these errors, which are usually corrected later.
